Public Works Director John Vial Retires After 30 Years of Service
Published on July 01, 2025
Public Works Director John Vial is retiring after four years with the City of Medford and more than three decades of public service across Oregon.
Vial’s career includes 13 years with Jackson County and over 13 years with the Oregon Department of Transportation. He joined the City in August 2021.
During his tenure, Vial led the Emergency Operations Center during the Almeda Fire and continuously advocated for his staff to ensure the department punched above its weight.
Colleagues acknowledged his invaluable experience, wisdom, and leadership throughout his career.
“He has a remarkable ability to connect—with employees, community members, and leaders at every level. His leadership style fosters trust, and his presence in the room always brought a calm, thoughtful approach to even the most complex challenges,” Human Resources Director Bonnie Barasch said during a recognition at the June 18 City Council meeting.
Vial said he plans to remain active in the community through volunteer work, family activities, and one of his favorite pastimes—birding.
Dan Worth, formerly of Scottsdale, Arizona, will assume the role of Public Works Director beginning July 1, 2025.
