Soldiers and cadets came together on Sunday to honor veterans at Medford’s historic I.O.O.F. Eastwood Cemetery.
Members of the Oregon Army National Guard and Southern Oregon University’s ROTC program joined forces for the effort.
Together, the group removed 400 pounds of natural debris and worked to restore headstones, many belonging to veterans, by clearing away moss and dirt.
"We respected the headstones, made sure we were gentle but also got off all the gunk," said Capt. Jacob Wolwowicz, H/141 commander. "These are people that lived in the community, died in the community, and these are still some people's family members' graves."
Thanks to their efforts, many once-hidden names and service details are now visible again.
Established in 1890, the cemetery is one of Medford’s oldest. It was sold to the City in the 1970s and is now managed by the Parks, Recreation and Facilities department.
The volunteer effort was organized by Volunteer Coordinator Tyson Thompson. For more information and opportunities in City parks and neighborhoods, click here.
