Southern Oregon kids will soon have an exciting new way to explore the outdoors with the approval of Medford’s first TRACK Trail.

The half-mile-long paved trail segment in Prescott Park will become a TRACK Trail, in partnership with nonprofit organizations Oregon Parks Forever and Kids in Parks, by the end of June.

TRACK Trails are part of a free, national program designed to encourage children and families to connect with nature through interactive, hands-on exploration. The self-guided trails are aimed at children in grades 1 through 6, and feature fun and educational activities that are designed to spark curiosity and create an adventurous experience.

Oregon Parks Forever will provide funding for the trail’s designation, which includes a 36-by-24-inch sign, colorful brochures, a webpage, stickers, and prizes for kids who register.

There are currently 313 TRACK Trails across the country, including 19 in Oregon. Oregon Parks Forever said installation for nearby trails in Ashland’s Lithia Park and McGregor Park north of Shady Cove are planned for later this spring.

The Parks and Recreation Commission approved the proposal with a 5-2 vote at their March 25 meeting.
