The United Soccer League (USL) presented the potential expansion of a professional men’s and women’s soccer franchise in Medford at Wednesday’s City Council Study Session.

In 2025, USL expressed interest in Medford, holding meetings with City leaders and collaborating with the Medford School District (MSD) on a conceptual proposal involving Spiegelberg Stadium, located on the Oakdale Middle School campus.

On November 5, Council directed staff to execute a non-binding Letter of Intent with USL, establishing a six-month exclusive negotiation window to explore feasibility and predevelopment work, compare renovation and new-build options, and identify a preferred concept and location.

USL indicated that Spiegelberg Stadium is conceptually favored as an existing facility due to its infrastructure and capacity, though other potential sites are also being evaluated. Evaluations consider cost, long-term use, and compatibility. The City and MSD emphasized that if Spiegelberg is selected, it must remain available for North Medford, South Medford, and Pop Warner football games and practices.

If the expansion moves forward, USL's men’s and women’s teams would bring approximately 40 home games annually. The stadium could also serve as a year-round “community living room,” hosting graduations, concerts, festivals, and other events. USL also highlighted potential economic and social benefits, philanthropy, sustainability, and opportunities for local market growth.

Council directed staff to bring the question of extending the Letter of Intent for an additional six months back to Council for consideration and decision, including more details on potential deliverables and staff commitments.
