Open burning starts March 1st for most of residents in Medford Rural Fire Protection District #2 (MRFPD2), and Medford Fire has introduced a new look and online option to apply for a burn permit.

Open burning is prohibited inside city limits and during fire season. A permit is required to burn, and the permit requirements must be followed.

Rural District residents can apply for a burn permit online here.  Before burning, residents must call 541-776-7007 to verify it is a burn day. For residents within the AQMA, open burning is prohibited November 1 through February in addition to during fire season. Click here to check if you live in the AQMA.
How to Apply for a Permit:
For Commercial & Agricultural Burn Permits, or other specialized permits, please call 541-774-2300 and ask to speak to FLSD staff for approval.
2. Under Burn Permits, click on the link for the District 2 Residential Burn Permit application.
3. Complete the online form.
  • Follow the requirements of the permit.
  • Call 911 if the fire gets out of control.
  • Keep pile sizes manageable.
  • Burn piles must be attended by an adult.
  • Tools and water to extinguish the fire must be available.
  • Extinguish 2 hours before dark (required by DEQ).
Burn Efficiently for Healthy Air Quality
Excessive smoke can cause health impacts, including increasing the concentration of chemicals and carcinogens in the air. Producing excessive smoke is an air quality violation that is subject to fines and restricted open burning privileges.
Help limit smoke in your community by:
  • Only burning on approved days (when the weather will encourage smoke to go up rather than stay close to the ground).
  • Burning only clean and dry vegetation (cover piles to protect from moisture until you are ready to burn).
  • Providing adequate air so the pile burns efficiently (loosely stack vegetation and add to the pile as needed).
  • Extinguishing piles that produce excessive smoke (let the materials dry out before attempting to burn again).
The Rural District newsletter, mailed to residents in MRFPD2, includes information on the new permit process and a hard copy.
