Rogue Rapids Swim Team Makes Waves in Medford and Beyond
Published on June 17, 2025
A newly formed swim team in Medford is making waves both locally and beyond.
Launched in January 2024, the Rogue Rapids Swim Team has already represented Southern Oregon on regional and national stages—and thanks to City support, more young athletes are diving into the sport.
With limited options for a swim team in the area, Vice President Laurel Naversen Geraghty, MD, co-founded the organization when the Rogue Credit Union Community Complex (Rogue X) was built.
The Rogue Rapids is a nonprofit, competitive USA Swimming team focused on expanding opportunities for youth swimmers in Southern Oregon. The team fosters a fun and supportive environment where participants can develop technique, skills, and teamwork.
In September 2024, the Medford City Council allocated $570,000 from the Council Community Initiative Fund (CCIF) to various community organizations and programs—including $10,000 in scholarship funds for the Rogue Rapids. Funded by local and state marijuana tax revenue, the CCIF supports projects that enhance community well-being, improve public spaces, and expand educational and cultural opportunities.
The CCIF helps support the team's Sofia Marks Scholarship Fund, created in honor of a North Medford High School student and swimmer who passed away from a rare form of bone cancer in July 2023.
“We want every kid to be able to participate,” Geraghty said at the June 4 City Council meeting. As of June 2025, 12 Rogue Rapids swimmers—about 11% of the team—have received scholarships.
“We want to thank you very much for your support,” Geraghty told the Council. “The $10,000 contributed has helped us make a difference in all these kids’ lives, and we appreciate you.”
