The City of Medford is celebrating the success of the Medford Outreach Court, an initiative launched in 2024 to make municipal court services more accessible to the community. This program helps individuals address legal challenges while connecting them to essential resources for a fresh start.
A Year of Impact
In its first year, the Outreach Court assisted about 200 people, resolving 1,810 municipal court cases. The program also connected participants to key services such as:
Instead of traditional punitive measures like fines or incarceration, the Outreach Court offers alternative sentencing options such as participation in rehabilitation programs or access to housing and support services. Cases are reviewed monthly to monitor progress and ensure that participants are meeting court requirements and making positive changes in their lives.
Meeting People Where They Are
The first Outreach Court session was held on January 17, 2024, at the Kelly Shelter (685 Market St., Medford). Inspired by the positive response, additional sessions took place throughout the year at community locations to reduce barriers and improve access. This approach has strengthened the relationship between the court and the community.
A collaboration between the judiciary, social service agencies, and other community stakeholders, the Outreach Court provides comprehensive support. Defendants can access resources such as job training, healthcare services, and substance abuse counseling to help them move forward.
Looking Ahead
After a strong first year, the Outreach Court will continue into 2025 with plans to reach even more individuals and expand access to support services. The program remains dedicated to helping people resolve legal matters while connecting them to resources for long-term success.
Please note that the Outreach Court does not handle domestic violence, felony, or juvenile cases. For more information and the full Outreach Court schedule, visit Medford Outreach Court.
