With the help of Cultural Outreach Coordinator, Lilia Caballero, the Medford Police Department was able to host a three-week Latino Citizen’s Academy in September 2023. These classes were taught by MPD’s Spanish speaking officers and employees.

They reviewed a variety of topics including domestic violence, traffic stops, code enforcement issues, fraud, drugs, and our K9 Program. There were approximately 22 attendees at each session.

"Providing information and connecting with our Latino community members is an important piece of our department’s mission," said Police Lieutenant Rebecca Pietila.

MPD began hosting the Latino Citizen’s Academy back in 2016. After the pandemic, these in-person events were cancelled and had not been revisited. It was a part of the MPD’s strategic plan to again host a Latino Citizen’s Academy.

MPD will be working to host another Latino Citizen's Academy in 2024, extending it to four weeks. There will also be a variety of new information covered.
