Local Artwork Brightens Downtown Medford Traffic Signal Boxes

Local art is taking to the streets of Medford, with 20 traffic signal boxes now showcasing colorful designs created by artists from across the Rogue Valley.

The Artbox Program, an initiative to bring more art to downtown, is a partnership between the City of Medford Planning Department, Downtown Medford Association, Travel Medford, and the Public Art Selection Committee. In May, the organizations encouraged artists from Jackson and Josephine counties working in any visual medium to submit artwork for consideration.

Artists were invited to create pieces inspired by themes including community identity and culture; significant people, places, and events in Medford’s history; and the region’s natural beauty, including orchards, landscapes, and native flora and fauna.

Downtown business owners and the selection committee reviewed the submissions and chose 20 pieces from 10 artists.

The artists and artwork featured on the signal boxes are:

• Amy Lopez — Medford and River Fun
• Colene Milligan — Coastal Redwoods and Bear with Me
• Daniel Oneil — Sugar Plum Acres Zinnias, Lavender Fields Forever, Illinois River, and Applegate Lake
• Direlene Wheeler — California Quail and American Kestrel
• Jennifer Elliott — Vance Pinto Colvig and Kim Novak
• Kailey Ousley — Backyard Beauty
• Lonna Jergensen — Medford Pears
• Paula Fong — Camas, Pear Blossom, Redwood, and Heron in Creek
• Sarah Crooks — Roxy in Purple
• Sid Enck Jr. — So Quiet and Still

Artists will receive a $250 stipend for each selected piece. The City plans to continue the initiative as funding becomes available.
