Crews are making major improvements at Harry & David Field, home of the Medford Rogues Baseball Club, as part of the City’s continued investment in recreation facilities.

The project replaces the field’s natural grass with Tahoma 31 Bermudagrass, a drought-resistant variety that requires less water and maintenance and recovers quickly from damage or repetitive use.  The turf is also used in professional and collegiate stadiums, including Dodger Stadium, Angel Stadium, and the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.

“It’s going to be incredible for our athletes to play not only on one of the best field surfaces in Oregon, but in the entire country,” said Jeff Weiss, general manager of the Medford Rogues.

In addition to the new playing surface, upgrades also include irrigation system improvements, artificial turf in bullpens and practice areas, and enhanced batting cages with lighting and new netting.

Funded through the City’s biennial budget process, the project is part of a $1.5 million turf replacement plan for Lithia & Driveway Fields, which includes Harry & David Field.

“The Medford Parks and Recreation Department is grateful to the City Council and Citizens’ Budget Committee for continuing the longstanding financial investments in updating and improving existing recreation facilities," said Rich Rosenthal, director of Medford Parks and Recreation. "The various improvements will greatly upgrade the quality and playability of Harry & David Field."

Work began in mid-October, with turf installation expected in early December, ahead of the spring high school season.

Owned and maintained by the City, Harry & David Field opened in 2005 and was renovated in 2012 to accommodate the Rogues. The ballpark also hosts Medford School District teams, the American Legion Mustangs, and numerous community events.
