Cougar Sighting in Prescott Park: Exercise Caution in the Area

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) has received reports of a recent cougar sighting near Prescott Park, prompting the placement of warning signs in the vicinity. The ODFW is urging the public to exercise caution and follow safety guidelines when visiting the park.

The ODFW recommends the following safety tips for individuals recreating in Prescott Park: 

  1. Stop, Don't Approach: Never approach a cougar under any circumstances. If you spot a cougar, stop and maintain a safe distance. 
  2. Stay Calm: In the event of a cougar encounter, it's crucial to remain calm. Avoid sudden movements or loud noises that might startle the animal. 
  3. Face the Cougar: Always face the cougar directly and never turn your back towards it. Cougars are less likely to see you as a threat if you maintain eye contact. 

Visitors to Prescott Park are encouraged to be vigilant and adhere to the provided safety guidelines(PDF, 497KB) . Report all sightings to ODFW by calling 541-826-8774.
