Jury Excusals

Can I get excused if the summons is for today?

Please note that we cannot excuse you on the day of trial.  Should you have an excuse or conflict, you will still need to appear and speak with the judge.

What if I fail to appear on the day that I am summoned?

The court has the power to order that you appear in court and explain why you were unable to report for jury service. Citizens who don't appear for jury service may be punished for contempt of court.

How do I submit a request for an excusal?

If you have just received a jury subpoena and are unable to serve on jury duty, please submit a written request to be excused, and it will be forwarded to the judge for review. If you have documentation regarding your reason for the request, the judge will be able to review that once you've submitted it. Please allow for processing times (typically, 5-7 days).

I'm over 70 yrs. old. Can I be excused?

All jurors are required to serve for jury duty as scheduled. If you are over 70 years old and want to be excused or have special circumstances that prevent you from being able to serve as a juror, please submit a written request to be excused.

I have a health condition. Can I be excused?

You will have to follow the normal course to request an excusal. The process involves submitting a written request to a judge for review. Please allow for processing times (typically, 5-7 days).

I no longer live in Medford, Oregon. Can I be excused?

Please contact the jury coordinator as they may require more information and there may be additional forms to complete. Do not assume that you are excused.

I have already served once this year and now I've received another notice. Do I have to serve again?

You may be chosen to actively serve on a jury once within a 24-month period at the Medford Municipal Court. The Circuit Courts have a three (3) year rule. If you think that you may be eligible for an excusal, please contact the jury coordinator for more information.

My spouse, child or partner received a notice for jury duty and are no longer at this address or are deceased.

Please contact the jury coordinator as they may require more information and there may be additional forms to complete.

English is not my first language, I will need an interpreter.

This is not a reason to be excused. An interpreter can be provided by the court. If a specific dialect is required, please specify what language and dialect is needed on the questionnaire. Otherwise, please notify the jury coordinator. Please provide the court notice as early as possible so arrangements can be made.
