With the school year underway, drivers are reminded to slow down, stay alert and use extra caution around schools, neighborhoods, bus stops and crosswalks.
Know the School Zone
School zones may have different requirements for when the 20 mph speed limit is in effect. Depending on the location, signs may indicate:
Stop for School Buses
Watch for school buses picking up and dropping off students. When a school bus has its red lights flashing and stop sign extended, drivers must stop, even when traveling in the opposite direction.
Slow Down and Stay Alert
Slow down in residential areas and around schools, particularly during the morning and afternoon when students are traveling to and from school. Watch for children crossing streets, gathering near bus stops, or walking and biking along roadways.
Always stop when directed to do so by a designated school crossing guard and wait until it is safe to proceed.
