Outreach Court: Beyond the Courtroom
Published on October 26, 2026
Community-based program helps individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability address legal challenges and work toward a fresh start.
A Story of Perseverance and Progress
The impact of Outreach Court can be seen in the progress of its participants, including Michelle White, who graduated from the program in September 2026.
In recognition of her perseverance, accountability, and personal transformation, Michelle received the first-ever Medford Municipal Court Challenge Coin. Created to recognize individuals who demonstrate meaningful progress, the coin represents the commitment and determination Michelle brought to her journey.
Michelle shared that Outreach Court was a source of inspiration throughout her journey and that she now recommends the program to others. Receiving the challenge coin “meant the world” to her. She carries it in her pocket every day and proudly shares it with others.
As Michelle continues building on her progress, she plans to complete her peer support certification, with the goal of helping others navigate their own journeys. Her aspirations reflect the lasting impact Outreach Court can have beyond the resolution of a court case.
Her story reflects the purpose of Outreach Court: to help individuals address legal matters while working toward greater stability, independence, and a positive future.
Meeting People Where They Are
Last week, Medford Municipal Court held an Outreach Court session at the Livability Team’s Fall Resource Fair, bringing court services directly into the community and creating opportunities to connect participants with local support.
Launched in January 2024, Outreach Court serves individuals experiencing homelessness and housing instability by helping them address legal matters while connecting them with resources such as housing assistance, behavioral health services, and employment support. Through collaboration among the judiciary, social service agencies, and community partners, the program takes an individualized approach that addresses underlying challenges and helps participants work toward long-term stability.
By reducing barriers to court access and giving participants a voice in resolving their cases, Outreach Court aims to break the cycle of homelessness and repeated involvement with the justice system.
In recognition of its innovative approach to municipal services, the City of Medford received the League of Oregon Cities’ 2026 Award for Excellence for the Outreach Court program.
