Historic Fountain Restored in Alba Park

A longtime fixture in Medford’s oldest public park is flowing again after more than two decades.
The Palm Fountain, located in Alba Park, was donated in 1934 by Charles W. and Callie Palm, a prominent Medford family. It features a statue of a boy with two dogs and an Art Deco-style drinking fountain designed for both people and pets. While the main fountain is now operational, the drinking fountain is still undergoing repairs.
According to the Southern Oregon Historical Society's (SOHS) website, the boy in the statue symbolizes youth, strength, hope, and happiness. SOHS notes that the Palms, devoted dog lovers, considered pets to be man’s best friends—a sentiment reflected in the design.
The fountain had been out of service due to long-standing electrical and mechanical issues. Van Row Mechanical, a local specialist, recently completed the restoration.
With nearby residential growth, the Parks, Recreation and Facilities Department saw an opportunity to restore the community feature.
The $42,398 restoration was made possible by the Council Community Initiative Fund, one of many projects supported by local and state marijuana tax revenue.
