City Selects Second Deputy City Manager

The City of Medford has selected DawnMarie Buckland to serve as its second Deputy City Manager, with a focus on economic development and urban renewal. The selection, supported by the Mayor and City Council, is scheduled for formal ratification at the October 21 City Council meeting. Buckland is expected to begin her new role on January 4, 2027.
Incoming City Manager Martha Bennett also interviewed Buckland prior to the selection and expressed her full support for the appointment. Bennett, who is scheduled to begin her role on November 30, looks forward to welcoming Buckland to the City's leadership team.
Buckland was one of three finalists in the City's recent City Manager recruitment process. A Medford native, she brings extensive local government leadership experience and a strong interest in returning to serve the community where she grew up.
Most recently, Buckland served as Executive Director and Chief Deputy Assessor for Maricopa County, Arizona. Her background also includes executive leadership roles in Paradise Valley and municipal budgeting and administration experience in Gilbert, Chandler and Peoria, Arizona.
The second Deputy City Manager position was established following the retirement of Medford Urban Renewal Agency (MURA) Director Harry Weiss and the vacancy of the City's Economic Development Director position. Rather than filling those positions separately, the City has consolidated their responsibilities into a new executive leadership role.
Under the direction of the City Manager, Buckland will work across City departments to advance Council priorities, support business recruitment and retention, and coordinate redevelopment initiatives. She will also serve as the executive staff liaison to MURA and take on additional responsibilities as assigned.
"DawnMarie brings a strong background in local government operations, financial management and organizational leadership," said Interim City Manager John Vial. "Her experience and perspective will be valuable as we continue advancing economic development opportunities, supporting redevelopment efforts and strengthening partnerships throughout our community."
