Becoming a Firefighter

COMPETITION IS FIERCE!

Medford Fire Department typically receives more than 100 applications for open positions. Here are steps you can take to make your application more competitive.

Consider doing your high school senior project on a fire related subject. Contact our office at 541-774-2300 for more information.
Participate in strength, flexibility, and endurance fitness programs. Make fitness part of your normal routine.
Become a volunteer firefighter. Medford Fire does not have a volunteer firefighter program. If you live in the Rogue Valley, contact Jackson County Fire District #3 or #5.
Become an accredited firefighter through the Oregon Department of Public Safety Standards & Training. Learn more here:

DPSST

Earn your Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certificates: Basic, Intermediate, Paramedic.
Work in a related field. Examples:
- Ambulance company transport medic.
- Oregon Department of Forestry wildland firefighter.
- Airport Fire Department firefighter.
Earn a college degree in Fire Science and/or Para-Medicine. More information under the Rogue Community College tab.
Contact Fire Departments where you want to work and ask about their employment requirements.
Test for open positions.

MEDFORD FIRE HIRING PROCESS

Chosen applicants who meet minimum requirements complete physical agility and written tests.
Finalists undergo a panel interview and technical skills assessment.
Job offers are contingent on successful completion of a full background investigation, medical physical, drug screen, and psychological exam.
Recruits are hired for a one year probationary period and must complete a Probationary Academy training course during their first year on the job.
